He is counted one among the three soldier and knight saint. He was a native of Cappadocia (Turkey). Around 305 as a high officer and General of the Emperor's army of Cappadocia, he suffered a death of martyr under the persecution of Diocletian. A church was built in memory of him at the place where he died.
Later Emperor Constantine built another church over there and the mortal remains of the martyr were taken to it. Constantine, the first Christian Emperor also was buried there in 360. The death of Achatius of Constantinople gave rise to an interesting legend: His body was thrown into the sea in a coffin. But it did not sink into it. The waves carried it to the cost of South Italy. In Chale in Calabria a church was built for this miracle worker saint. Relics of this saint are venerated in Hirsau, Lorch and Weingarten.
